Pine Borers
Scientific name: Tomicus destruens, Tomicus minor, Tomicus piniperda, Ips sp. y Orthotomicus sp.
Affected plant: It attacks all the species from the Pinus genre and it also may affect Picea abies
They are coleopteran from the Scolytinae sub-family, very similar among themselves. The T.piniperda and the T.minor are found in cold climate areas, while the T.destruens is found in coastal areas. The main difference is that, while the adults of T.piniperda and T.minor spend an inactive winter, the adults of T. destruens are active from September to April, period during which they lay their eggs on the trunks and also move to the extreme sprouts to feed.
The death of the trees can be seen from late winter to early summer.
The holes from where insects penetrate can be seen, often together with resin perspiration, below the bark of the trees, as well as the exit or emergency round orifices for the new generation.
