Greenfly
Scientific name: Aphis, Cinara, Eriosoma, Eucallipterus, Mindarus, Myzus, Tinocallis, Pemphigus...
Affected plant: Large variety of hosts, both leafy as conifers, trees and bushes
The Greenfly is one of the most common pests in our country, as it is a species with a wide variety of genres, some of them attack a single species of plant and others are more polyphagous. They are tiny insects (few millimetres) and of several colours, although they are mainly green, yellow or black.
It is a pest that attacks in spring and summer, mainly in conditions of environmental dryness. They act by nailing their beaks into the leaves and sucking the sap.
The most characteristic damages it causes are attacks on the sprouts, mainly the most tender ones, which is where they preferably settle in the sticky and rolled leaves (due to the molasses they excrete). They are also responsible for the apparition of the fungus known as negrilla (Fumagina) and of ants, as they use the molasses they excrete and are close to them in order to clean and protect them.
Another important aspect to take into account is that they act as vectors of diseases such as virus, as they prick infected plants and, when pricking healthy ones, they pass on the virus.
